All you need to know about Collagen Plus!

So, collagen, right? We are pro-collagen (obviously, ours is delicious hahaha!) and we absolutely love our Mixed Berry flavoured collagen in smoothies, juices or just on its own in water, but let's get into the nitty gritty of why we love collagen so much!

Tell me about the Collagen Plus!

Firstly, our collagen is pure marine (fish derived) collagen peptides sourced from the skin of deep sea wild caught cod fish from the incredible waters of Norway. If that’s not incredible enough, the sustainability story comes from the way that it is sourced, as it is taken from the skin of the fish which would otherwise be left unused. Our marine collagen is Marine Stewardship Council certified, allowing people to have confidence in purchasing fully sustainable products. Our marine collagen is low molecular weight resulting in improved digestibility and increased bioavailability. The protein content is greater than 90%.

The collagen peptides in Yes Please Collagen Plus are a hydrolysed form of collagen, which is a unique oligopeptide supplying the necessary amino acids for the development of collagen in human connective tissues and skin. Through an enzymatic hydrolysis process, the product loses its gelling effect and becomes water-soluble (which makes for perfect drinks!). Collagen peptides have a better bioavailability in the human body than gelatine, due to the difference in molecular size. The absorption of marine collagen peptides into the body is around 1.5 times more efficient than collagen from bovine or porcine sources and the bioavailability is much higher. Also, this collagen is composed of type 1 collagen, which is the form of collagen that assists in formation for the skin, tendons, ligaments, and bones.

We have added Vitamin C to our Collagen Plus, which is an antioxidant and assists in the protein synthesis, connective tissue production, and maintains collagen health. Our Collagen Plus also contains Magnesium which is an incredible mineral to add to your day as it supports bone health.

WHY Collagen? What is the need for collagen? What’s the research looking like?

At Yes Please Health, we are realistic health lovers, so we KNOW there are ways to get collagen into your diet through food! Eating foods like meats and shellfish are great ways to get that collagen in - however, if you’re not consuming enough collagen or feel like you need a little boost - this is where we come in!

Collagen is a protein found in the body of animals (including humans!) It makes up connective tissues like skin, tendons, cartilage, organs and bones - which is why we need it! When collagen is hydrolysed, it is broken down into smaller, easy to process particles. When it comes to collagen supplementation, there are type 1, type 2 and type 3. Yes Please Collagen Plus is made up primarily of type 1 collagen which is best for skin health.

Studies have shown that “preliminary results are promising for the short and long-term use of oral collagen supplements for wound healing and skin aging. Oral collagen supplements also increase skin elasticity, hydration, and dermal collagen density. Collagen supplementation is generally safe with no reported adverse events”. This study was completed using 2.5 g to 5 g of collagen per day for 8 weeks in women.

Another study was completed with the same amount of 2.5 g to 5 g of collagen in part of the participants and the other half was placebo. Skin elasticity, moisture, transepidermal water loss and skin roughness were measured before the first oral application, after 4 weeks and at the 8 week mark of regular intake. At the end of the study, skin elasticity in both collagen dosage groups showed a statistically significant improvement in comparison to placebo.

As you can see, there are some incredible results, even with a smaller dosage in regards to skin health, hydration and elasticity. In regards to sports injuries, tendons, ligaments etc, the dosage may need to be higher (around 10-15 g per day). Our Collagen Plus has 4 g of hydrolysed collagen per serve, and is a 1-2x daily supplement, so at minimum you will be consuming 4-8 g of hydrolysed collagen per day, which is well over the 2.5 g amount of the above research articles.

Why a powder not a capsule?

The reason as to why we decided to develop our collagen into a powder instead of a capsule form is because of the dose required. Unfortunately, as easy as taking a capsule is, most are unable to get a dose high enough, including the required vitamin C to absorb. Some collagen capsules have less than 1 g of collagen, which may require you taking 3-4x a day (perhaps more) to have the same effect, which would require more cost for the consumer as the tablet/jar size would be standard, and the serving size of each jar would be less.
